Nonfiction with our 3rd Grade Buddies

This week we read our Penguin nonfiction books to our 3rd grade friends, and they read a nonfiction book to us.

Solid Shapes

We are learning about solid shapes. Here are a few of our shape centers.

Shape sort

Will it roll, stack or slide?

Habitat Centers

The children chose which habitat they wanted to explore in.

The Arctic Zone

Children made an igloo out of sugar cubes.  They had to count and record how many cubes they used.  They loved playing "Don't Break the Ice."

The Desert

The children loved digging animals out of the sand.  They sorted the animals by their beginning sound.

The African Savannah

In the Savannah, students played Crocodile Teeth and made animal puppets.

The Ocean

Children went fishing and sorted real words from nonsense words.

They loved playing ocean animal memory.

The Woodlands

Children estimated how many animal crackers are in one box.  They counted, then sorted each animal cracker by their habitat.  Of course they had to eat them!

Habitat Sort
Children made flip books of the different habitats.

Polar Bears

Guess who else loves the ice?  That's right Polar Bears, but before we learned a few facts about Polar Bears we had to describe ice.

Which material makes the best insulator for ice?  Newspaper or tin foil?
