Coins and more...

We are learning about coins but most importantly we are learning how to save, spend and donate our money. Every child in the class has a job.  Just like me, they will get paid for doing their job for the day.  Each child will be paid 15 cents for doing their job and at the end of the day they can earn an extra 5 cents which we call a bonus pay (for doing their job well).  Each week, the children can spend their earnings at our class store.  As a class, we talked about jobs and responsibilities.  There are some things that are expected and some things that are not.   We read different books about the character's attitude about money and had a great time investigating coins.  We put the coins that we investigated with into a jar and decided as a class how to spend the money.  The children came up with some great ideas.  They wanted to buy crayons, glue sticks, things for centers and we had one little boy who wanted to donate the money (which was only $6. 27) to somebody who needed food.  We decided as a class to donate the money in our jar to our community.  So we are saving money to donate to The Samaritan Ministries of Winston Salem.  So how are we going to earn money to donate?   We are planning to have a lemonade stand and sell lemonade!

Investigating Coings

Collecting the coins.

What will we do with our coins?

Coin Centers

President's Day

We learned about the election process as we read Duck for President.  The chlidren enjoyed campaigning for their favorite farm animal.  They made posters of their animal and persuaded us to vote for them.

Guess who won?

Pig

We then found a stuffed animal pig and the children voted to name him Mr. Pepper.  I fixed up
a little tote bag with a couple of books and a journal and of course Mr. Pepper.  He now will be visiting each of your homes.  Have fun with Mr. Pepper!

Of course we had to learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

We also learned more about our National Symbols, especially our flag.

Maps and more Maps!

We read The Jolly Postman and read a map of his mail route, using North, East, South and West.

We had a great time learning about Cardinal Directions and about the Compass Rose. We played North, East, South and West.

We sorted objects and symbols.

We had fun reading the blueprint of our school.
After learning about maps, we used blocks to make a map of our bedrooms.  The children had fun making their maps and even made a map key to go with it!

Kites

While we are still waiting for our Flat Stanley's to come in, we read Chapter 3.  We discussed the different
types of kites and wrote descriptive sentences about kites.

We are waiting for the wind to blow, so we can fly kites.

Mailing our Friendly Letters

We finally mailed off our Friendly letters.  Be sure to check your mailbox!
